Which Birmingham page to trust
Birmingham’s website has had more than one page about liquids. We base this guide on its security FAQs and security advice pages, which both give the 2 litres limit. If you find different advice elsewhere on the site, go by the two pages linked above.
Packing for a 2 litres airport
- The limit is per container. Several 2 litres bottles are each within it; a single bigger one isn’t.
- Pastes and gels count — toothpaste, sun cream, hair gel.
- Leave liquids and your laptop in the bag when you reach the scanner.
What Birmingham doesn’t say
The pages we checked don’t cover whether you need a clear plastic bag, whether metal or insulated bottles must be empty and whether your own containers need their size printed on them. That doesn’t mean these are allowed or banned — just that Birmingham hasn’t said. The national GOV.UK exemptions for medicine, special diets and baby food apply as at every UK airport.

Before you pack for the return
The 2 litres allowance is for flights leaving Birmingham. Coming back through Manchester, Stansted or Luton, you’d be limited to 100ml containers again, and airports abroad set their own rules.
