Taking a bike on a plane

How to pack a bike for the airline
easyJet and Wizz Air spell out exactly how they want it:
- easyJet: Pack it in a bicycle box or bicycle bag. One bicycle per box or bag, with nothing else inside (e.g. no clothing).
- Wizz Air: Pack in a bicycle travel case with wheels and pedals removed and handlebars turned parallel, or in cardboard with the tyres deflated.
Even where it isn’t required, deflating the tyres a little, removing the pedals and protecting the derailleur makes damage less likely. If you don’t have a box, a bike travel bag or case on Amazon UK (opens in a new tab) (paid link) is the usual alternative. Weigh the packed box or bag with a luggage scale on Amazon UK (opens in a new tab) (paid link): a hard case can add several kilos before the bike goes in.
Box size limits
British Airways: up to 190 × 95 × 65 cm. Wizz Air: up to 149 × 119 × 171 cm. The other airlines don’t publish a box size on the pages we checked — ask when you book if your case is large.
Electric bikes and hydraulic brakes
Ryanair and easyJet don’t accept electric bicycles. Other airlines don’t mention e-bikes on the pages we checked, so contact them before you book. easyJet adds: Bikes with hydraulic suspension or brakes are accepted.
