Flying with golf clubs: airline rules compared

Golf clubs can only go in the hold — GOV.UK doesn’t allow them in hand luggage. You have to add them to your booking, and the weight limit depends on the airline: from 20 kg on Ryanair and easyJet to 32 kg on Wizz Air. British Airways counts a golf bag as one of your checked bags instead.

Flying BA with golf clubs

Golf equipment counts as one item of checked baggage when your ticket includes hold baggage. BA ties this to tickets that include hold baggage, so if yours doesn’t, ask BA how to add your clubs. Tell BA more than 72 hours (at least 3 days) before you travel. BA’s page doesn’t give a separate weight limit for golf equipment, so it’s worth asking when you call.

Weigh it before you go

A full tour bag with clubs, balls, shoes and waterproofs can get heavy quickly. On airlines with a 20 kg limit there isn’t much room, and on easyJet sports equipment weight can’t be combined (“pooled”) with your hold luggage allowance. Weigh the bag at home once it’s packed — a luggage scale on Amazon UK (opens in a new tab) (paid link) makes this easy.
